When Marie arrived, her roots were an obvious contrast to her dyed brown hair. Kristy put silver highlights and pepper-brown lowlights throughout Marie’s hair to help blend her roots so she didn’t have such an obvious line of demarcation. Doing this also helps you get used to having lighter hair, especially if you’re transitioning from a darker base color.

Technique: Highlights and Warm Brown Lowlights

Marie at Six Months

For Marie, herself a hairdresser who says she can’t keep her hands off her own hair, going silver has involved experimentation and a lot of trial and error. In her first session, Kristy gave her a tube of toner to take home after the highlights and lowlights were applied. But when Marie arrived at the next photo shoot, about nine weeks later, it seemed she’d used too much of the toner, because her hair was darker than it had been. Lightening the hair with silver highlights means using bleach, which increases the porosity of the hair. When the hair is more porous, it can absorb too much toner, which is what had happened. Here, Kristy applied a purple-based toner to try to re-highlight Marie’s hair and make her line of demarcation less noticeable. We didn’t want to use bleach, as her hair was fragile from the various processes.
